Firstly, how good is our new website!!! I want to give the board a massive shout out for funding this upgrade. This has been long over due but you know what they say, good things come to those who wait. We have had a long list of things that we wanted to achieve as a board and it is nice being at a stage where we can look at things like our website. Our website is going to become a one stop shop for everything you need to know about GMS and where you can stay up to date with everything going on at school.

Thank you to everyone for your support at Cross Country yesterday. We love having these events and having everyone come along to support. Congratulations to everyone for competing and well done to those who placed and also those who qualified for Eastern Cross Country. Mrs Williams will be sending information out today in regards to all Eastern Qualifiers.

This week the board approved 5 out of zone placements for term 3-4 2025. Due to families leaving Gore we have 5 places open to out of zone families. If you know of any out of zone children turning 5 after the 14th July 2025, then let them know that they can apply for one of the places. All ECE centres were emailed with this info and it is going to be advertised in the ensign next Wednesday. Applications closed 11th June 2025 at 12pm.

While I'm on the topic, do you have a child starting school this year that you haven't enrolled yet? If so then you really need to get in touch asap.

We have been looking into accounts again and emailing whānau about amounts owing. If you have any questions about your accounts then please get in touch with Jan to discuss.

We would like to welcome Luca McDougall and Danzig Jones to GMS. We are so happy to have you join our kura and we hope you have had a great start to your schooling. 

Well done to everyone for a great event with everyone giving it their best. Ngā mihi to whānau for all of the support and cheering the kids on. Wow what a fun morning we had at Gore New World recently with our winners of our Grocery Grab raffle. Time went so fast but they were speedy and all took home 3 great trolley loads of groceries.

With that done we can now confirm that we made an amazing $14,875 profit on this raffle!! Again a massive thank you to the school community for getting behind and supporting us with this raffle. 

This year's Disco date has been set. We are going to start Term 3 off with a bang and dance our way into the new term. Mark Friday 18th July in your calendars. More details to come closer to the time. 

That’s all from the PTA at the moment, we are busy in the background applying for grants, working with playground specialists and coming up with fundraising ideas to continue on our current goal to help fund a new playground.

Room 5 has hit the ground running this term and everyone is super focused on their learning. 

For reading we are reading the novel called ‘The Iron Man’. Everyone has their own copy and we are enjoying reading this together as a class. We are experts at picking out the similes and onomatopoeia the author has used and answering comprehension questions with a full sentence.

We already have a lot of knowledge about stars from last term and now we are expanding our knowledge and learning about space and the planets! This week we have learnt about comets, asteroids and meteors. Next week we will start investigating and finding out more about the 8 planets.

During writing we have focused on character descriptions. Mrs Williams is reading ‘Matilda’ to us and we have written a character description about Mr Wormwood, Miss Honey and Miss Trunchball. Have a read of some of our writing below! Next we will move onto a setting description.

In Room 5 we are focusing on our term value of Integrity - ngākau tapatahi.  We know this means always doing the right thing even when no one is watching. We are practising this during the school day and Mrs Williams always sees so many Rūma Rima tamariki showing this great value. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the cross country. You all showed great perseverance and should feel proud of yourselves!

This term is certainly going by very quickly and there is only 4 weeks left until holidays!! Enjoy the rest of the term whanau!

Room 5 character descriptions

Miss Honey is a lovely teacher. Her skin is like glass that if you tap it with metal it will shatter to pieces. She is around 23 or 24 years old. This welcoming teacher is scared of old Miss Trunchball, but she is still brave.

Miss Honey is really impressed with Matilda’s very smart brain. She is not impressed with Mr and Mrs Wormwoods behaviour. She also is smart like Matilda. Her body is slim and she likes to read books.

Mr Wormwood is Matilda’s horrible father. He wears jackets with very bright checks, and even pale green or yellow ties. His fat front teeth stick out like a bunny eating a carrot.

Mr Wormwood is a very selfish, arrogant, boastful man. Not many people like him which makes him one of the most unlikeable people in the book Matilda.

Miss Honey is a lovely, kind, and amazing teacher. She has blue eyes like the ocean, and light brown hair. Miss Honey also has pale skin, and an oval face. She is roughly 23 or 24 years old. Miss Honey teaches at Crunchem Hall Elementary School. She teaches the bottom class with five year old children. Miss Honey is very slim and smart. Miss Honey likes Matilda’s effort in her learning. She doesn’t like Miss Trunchbull because she is rude to the children. Miss Honey is mild, and quiet when a person is talking in her class. She loves being in school with Matilda because she is very intelligent. Miss Honey doesn’t like Mrs and Mr Wormwood because they are rude to Matilda. She is a caring, and honest teacher at Crunchem Hall Elementary School. She understands children in her amazing class.

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the term? Time is flying by, and we’ve been busy learning, exploring, and creating!

In Reading and Writing, our focus has been on narrative texts. We’ve been using the ‘story mountain’ structure to understand the key elements of storytelling, including characters, setting, problems, and resolutions. Through reading a variety of texts and watching short narrative clips, we’re building the skills and confidence to craft our own imaginative stories.

In Mathematics, we’ve been exploring number concepts using Numicon. This hands-on approach is helping us understand place value, build numbers, and recognise number patterns. We’re also learning how to identify and create our own patterns by discovering the rules that underpin them.

Our inquiry into our Solar System has been a real highlight in Room 7 – it’s truly fascinating! Over the past two weeks, we’ve had a special focus on the Moon. We’ve discovered that the Moon is a natural satellite that takes about a month to orbit Earth. We’ve also learned about its valleys, mountains, and craters, and we’re becoming familiar with the eight phases of the Moon. It’s been exciting spotting these phases in the night sky!

We also channelled our creativity into some Moon-inspired artwork. After carefully tracing a circle, we blended shades of blue and white to create a soft lunar glow. Then we added stars and constellations with splashes of white paint – the results were stunning! What do you think?

Bible in Schools

Bible in Schools is every Thursday at 2.30pm. If your child is not attending then they must be picked at 2.30pm.

Every Friday (only) children can bring an item of food that can go into our heat up oven so that it is nice and warm by lunch. All food should be pre-cooked and only require heating (No raw meat). Pies, mini pizzas, savouries, mac n cheese etc etc. All items must be clearly named (first and last name and class number). No plastic wrapping please. All items go straight to your classroom each morning and get placed into your class's heat up container. 

Safety and role modeling is top priority. Please use the crossing at all times. We have seen a few parents crossing the road up by the middle gate. Other children see you and may follow you. It's only an extra 50 metres so please come to the crossing and cross there. Also please be at school before 8.50am as this is when road patrol finishes.

This is a friendly reminder that school starts at 8.55am. Please ensure that children are at school before this time so that they are ready to start class at this time. Road Patrol also finishes at 8.50am so for safety reasons please make sure children are here before that time so that they can cross the road safely.

11.00am - Morning tea

Merino jerseys are available to order and will now be the black merino jersey. The price is $90.00 per jersey. 

If you still have the blue merino or purchased a  second hand one these are still able to be worn as part of the school uniform. There is a sample of the new jersey along with sizes for anyone to view at the office.
